Share your views as a carer on residential and nursing home services for older people

Closed 14 Feb 2020

Opened 17 Dec 2019

Are you receiving a good service as a carer from the residential or nursing home where your family member or friend lives? For example, are they keeping you informed, involving you as much you want, and making visits a pleasant experience.

We are keen to hear from anyone whose family member or friend is an older person (someone aged over 64) who is resident in an East Sussex care home, either permanently or for short-term visits. Understanding people's experiences will help us to refresh our contract for residential and nursing home placements for older people.

How to take part

You can complete the online survey or email your comments to us via the email address on the right.

Please give us a call or email us if you need us to:

  • post you a copy of the survey and a pre-paid envelope,

  • help you to take part in the survey.

Why We Are Consulting

We are currently updating our contract for residential and nursing care placements for older people. This includes short stays for respite care. The contract sets out the service specification that care homes and nursing homes will need to meet if they want people we are funding to be placed with them.

The main requirement in the contract is that they must be registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The regulations that apply to organisations registered with CQC are very detailed. We are therefore not planning to include many additional requirements in the contract. One area where we are considering adding requirements is around how residential and nursing homes work with carers.

We have a good understanding of people's experiences of living in care homes through the national social care survey that all local authorities are required to carry out, as well as individual reviews of people living in care homes. We have less information about the experience of the family and carers of people living permanently in long-term care or staying in care for respite breaks. This short survey aims to capture people's experiences and views about services. This will help us decide if there is anything we need to add to the contract around how homes work with family members and carers.

We are proposing to consult with care home providers next year and publish a final version of the contract after that. We will share the results of the survey and what happens next.

Privacy information: This survey is anonymous and we don't ask you to provide any personal information. Please ensure that any comments you make don't include any names or personal details of you or anyone else. You can find more information about how the data will be stored and processed by East Sussex County Council on our website.
