Sensory Impairment and Reablement Team: Your views on our proposed name change
Overview
We are proposing to change the name of the Sensory Impairment and Reablement Team to the “Sensory Support and Reablement Team”. We would like your views on this proposed change.
Background
There are several reasons for proposing the name change. First, the term ‘impairment’ establishes the standard as ‘hearing’, and anything different as ‘impaired’. This implies that something is not as it should be, and ought to be fixed if possible.
Second, the term ‘visually impaired’ is more commonly used by professionals in the health and social care sectors, rather than by people living with sight loss. It may therefore be seen as a clinical term.
By substituting the word ‘impairment’ with ‘support’, the Council hopes to present a more positive, strength-based description of the service it provides to East Sussex residents.
