Overview

East Sussex County Council is doing an assessment of pharmacies in the county, which includes hearing from residents about their experience accessing local pharmacies. To gather this information a public survey will be done. In order to make sure the survey is clear, accessible, and easy to complete we carried out user testing with a People Bank member.

What People Bank members said How we responded

1. Overall the survey feels clear and concise, including some important questions.

1. We are glad to hear it was a positive experience completing the survey and that it asks questions you would want to answer.

2. When asking where people collect medication from, the term “dispensing practice” doesn’t feel clear.

2. Wording simplified to “pharmacy inside a GP surgery”.

3. The answer options for asking how often someone uses a pharmacy take a little while to understand. In addition, could the options start with “once a month”?

3. We agree the answer options felt too complicated, so we have simplified them too “Weekly; Monthly; Every few months; Once a year or less; Not sure”. We haven’t started the options with “once a month” or “monthly”, as it's best practice to have answer options listed in chronological order.

4. When asking about people’s experience of accessing pharmacies at certain times, the wording within the question “or if someone visits for you” isn’t consistent with wording in the survey elsewhere.

4. We have taken this wording out of the question and added the following as an instruction line under the question, to be consistent with the rest of the survey: “If someone else goes to the pharmacy for you, please answer on their behalf”.

5. Should the question asking about experience of accessing the pharmacy building include “parking” in the list of examples that define what accessing the pharmacy could mean.

5. The list of examples has been updated to cover “getting to” the building. The word “parking” has not been used as some pharmacies have little to no control over the parking availability, but this update still allows people to talk about their ability to park within their answer.

6. Should the survey include a question about people’s experience of having a conversation with their pharmacist, or the services they receive from their pharmacist.

6. This survey is focused on understanding people’s experience of physically accessing pharmacies for their services.

“The feedback we received from user testing was incredibly useful. All of the comments and suggestions were relevant, and we’ve been able to improve the survey as a result” - Public Health.
