Why your views matter
In June 2012 the County Council was awarded £2.4 million from the Government’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF) to introduce measures to improve conditions for those walking, cycling and using public transport.
The aim of the LSTF programme is to support local authorities in delivering local transport schemes that will help deliver economic growth, whilst cutting carbon emissions and increasing levels of physical activity.
The money is to be used to introduce packages of local transport improvements in Lewes, Eastbourne, Newhaven and Peacehaven. This has to be spent by the end of March 2015, by which time all of the schemes will have to be implemented.
The A259 provides an important link between Newhaven and Peacehaven. Earlier this year, key stakeholders were asked about the main issues faced by pedestrians, cyclists and bus users in this area. Using this information and the results of an audit of existing conditions along the road we have developed a package of proposed improvements.
In Newhaven our focus has been on trying to improve conditions for cyclists travelling across and within the town.
