COVID-19 vaccines: a survey of care home managers

We received 83 responses to the survey. Out of 297 care homes contacted in East Sussex, this represents a 28% response rate.

The survey findings positively suggest that the majority of respondents know how and where to access vaccinations, and that many sites are open at accessible sites and times. The responses also indicate that there are many organizations in East Sussex already providing good quality support for their staff to access vaccinations.

The survey shows that staff and managers are motivated to access COVID-19 vaccination for many reasons: for example, the benefits to themselves and their family, and those they have a duty of care to protect. However, there remain some barriers for staff and managers to access vaccination, such as access to clear, simple information on vaccine safety and benefits. Legislation around vaccination and sick pay were also cited as barriers.

Public Health will be using these findings, as well as other data sources, to plan ways that support care staff and managers to enable even greater access to future vaccinations, and to increase overall vaccination uptake for COVID-19 and other vaccinations.

Overview

Following our recent, successful survey for care home staff on the COVID-19 vaccines, we are asking a few follow-up questions to care home managers. This survey asks about the capability, opportunities, and motivators for employees in your organisation to get the COVID-19 vaccines.

Why your views matter

The aim of the survey is to learn from the successes and barriers in the vaccine programme to date, to prepare for future vaccine programmes such as autumn COVID-19 boosters and flu vaccines.
