EAST SUSSEX COUNTY COUNCIL OUTCOME OF TREE FELLING CONSULTATION
Between 28 March 2025 and 25 April 2025, East Sussex County Council ran a public consultation on the felling of the two trees on Langney Road.
As a part of the Eastbourne Town Centre Movement and Access Package Phase 2a works, improvements are proposed along Langney Road to convert the road to two-way from the current one-way traffic flow (northbound). Vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes only would be permitted to access Langney Road from the Susans Road junction but to facilitate this, it would be necessary to provide some form of turning facility.
The only area where a turning facility could be provided is outside of Dominos Pizza and 7ply, but a small amount of road widening would be required to achieve this. This would require the removal of the two existing trees.
Options to provide a turning area that did not impact on the trees were considered during the design process. This included:
- The provision of a turning area without any widening
- Re-positioning the turning area southwards into the pedestrianised area.
From this it was determined that there was insufficient space available to safely turn a vehicle up to 7.5 tonnes without providing any widening. Options that positioned the turning area within the new precinct could introduce additional conflict between turning vehicles and pedestrians.
A total of three new trees and six planters will be planted as part of the Eastbourne Town Centre Movement and Access Package Phase 2a scheme. Construction of this scheme is due to commence in Summer 2025 and finish in Summer 2026.
Two responses were received to the consultation, one which was supportive of the tree felling and the other did not leave any comments/feedback.
Based on the consultation results and the design engineering options detailed above, the Local Highway Authority has approved the proposal to remove the two trees.

Overview
This consultation will be open from Friday 28th March and close on Friday 25th April.
As a part of the Eastbourne Town Centre pedestrian upgrade works, minor improvements will be carried out along Langney Road to convert this to two-way from the current one-way traffic flow (northbound). Vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes only will be permitted to access Langney Road from the Susans Road junction but in order to facilitate this, it is necessary to provide some form of turning facility.
The only area where a turning facility can be provided is outside of Dominos Pizza and 7ply but a small amount of road widening will be required to achieve this.
The drawing below shows the space required to turn a 7.17m vehicle in one manoeuvre on full lock.
There is no scope to carry out any widening on the western side of the road due to the proximity of the Highway Boundary. The only option available, therefore, is to widen the road on the eastern side which, in turn, will require the removal of the two existing trees.
Image below shows the two trees that require removal.
Options to provide a turning area that did not impact on the trees were considered during the design process, including the provision of a turning area without any widening and re-positioning the turning area southwards into the pedestrianised area. From this it was determined that there was insufficient space available to safely turn a vehicle up to 7.5 tonnes without providing any widening. Options that positioned the turning area within the new precinct would impact on the next phase of the scheme and would also introduce additional conflict between turning vehicles and pedestrians.
3 new trees will be planted within the town centre as a part of the scheme. These will be supplemented with 6 planters that will be placed on the new surface.
